What it means for a piece to be on brand

A piece is on brand when you can tell whose it is before reading it. It is not about being pretty: it is about not contradicting the other fifty.

"On brand" means you can tell whose a piece is before anyone reads it. It says nothing about quality: a piece can be beautiful and off brand, and that is usually the expensive case, because it is the one nobody wants to throw away.

What puts it on brand is measurable, not a feeling. That the colours are the kit colours and not ones that look close. That the type is the brand type and not whatever came by default. That the text fits the space it has, without shrinking until it cannot be read or spilling past the margin. That the contrast holds up on a phone in full sun.

All of that can be checked by eye, which is exactly why it breaks: checking fifty pieces by eye is a job nobody does twice with the same attention. What goes first is never the main colour, it is the margin, the weight of a headline, or one word too many that drops the type two points.

In Piecerun those checks run on the drawn piece, not on the text: literal colour, literal font, contrast, how much text fits and what spills over.
